Description
Gyokuro is Japan’s most prestigious green tea, distinguished by its 30-day shading process that elevates chlorophyll and amino acid levels. This traditional cultivation method creates a distinctive umami character and fresh spring notes absent in unshaded teas.
The shading restricts sunlight, forcing the tea plant to produce more nitrogen compounds, resulting in a notably sweeter, more complex infusion than standard green teas. Gyokuro commands premium prices in Japan due to its labour-intensive production and limited harvest window.
Serve at 50–60°C with 4–5 grams per 100ml of water, allowing 90–120 seconds steeping. The tea pairs well with light seafood dishes or used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.
